Welcome to our September Newsletter,
It has been a busy month of planning and preparation, contracts and confirmations. We have been working on plans for the pre-season and playing season for the Mystics, and this is always a really busy time of year. All ANZ Championship team’s had to be finalised by 30 September, and our 2014 Northern Mystics squad has taken great shape. Debbie Fuller is really pleased with the quality of the team for 2014, and we are now in the process of finalising the support services for the team. We are also at the time when the ten teams involved in the ANZ Championship are reviewing our three year participation agreement, which entitles us to enter a team in the Championship.
Budgeting is also underway, which includes the setting of the fee’s going forward. A full update will be provided at the centre forum being held on Saturday 2 November – Trusts Arena. We have extended the day to include workshops and a full programme will be sent out over the next week or so to the centres. The start time will be 10 am - and the workshops will be completed by 4.15 pm. Really looking forward to seeing as many centres as possible in attendance.
To help those who have to travel long distances to attend we will be providing fuel vouchers for those travelling over 100K’s and who have car-pooled where possible. Trish will provide more information when she sends out the invitations.
Best of luck to the teams playing in the Lion Foundation Netball Champs, some great scores coming through so far.
Cheers
Julie Paterson – CEO Netball Northern Zone
Trish Wilcox (Community Netball Manager – It’s great to be back after a successful World Youth Cup campaign coaching the Samoa U21 Netball team. It was an amazing experience and to achieve 10th the highest place by a Samoa U21 team was the icing on the cake.
On 19th September a Junior Pilot review was held at NNZ with the key centre personnel from the 5 centres in the Netball Northern Zone that ran a junior pilot scheme. It was great to hear such positive feedback and how well received the new format was by the participants and centre junior communities. NNZ then hosted everyone to the Silver Ferns test which was a fun way to say thank you to these wonderful passionate Centre personnel involved in junior development .A big thank you to Auckland, Howick Pakuranga, Pukekohe, North Wairoa and Waiuku Netball Centres for their involvement and support of the Junior Pilot Schemes. I will speaking to each netball centre in the coming weeks around their Junior Netball programmes.
Congratulations to Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre on a very successful UNISS week, we have already had lots of positive feedback on the week and will be sending out an evaluation form to the schools involved for feedback. This feedback will then be passed on to Waitakere Netball Centre who are hosting UNISS in 2014. A shout out to all the amazing volunteers from the Centre who helped made the week run so smoothly.
Have travelled up North to Wellsford, Whangarei and Kaikohe last week, it was lovely catching up with Sport Northland staff, and key centre personnel working hard for their centres in their respective roles.
We are currently interviewing for our junior development role and are excited by the calibre of the applicants, the successful applicant will be involved in the Junior Programme roll out throughout the Zone.
Our Zone Community netball Team have been busy:-
Darlene Lang our Northland Development Officer is busy working in Kaikohe primary schools with our active schools programme which has seen children enjoying skills sessions and having opportunities to play the junior modified game. These have proved great for teaching fundamental skills to the children and professional development for the teachers.
Jan Skilton our Umpire Development Officer is currently overseas visiting family having a well-earned break
Tania Heaps our Counties Development Officer has been busy attending prize giving’s and finals in some of the Counties centres , facilitating NNZ workshops, facilitating holiday programmes and supporting our Counties Coach coordinators, just a few of the areas she has been involved in of late !
Hamish Barton (High Performance Manager) The major focus for this month was UNISS which was hosted by Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre involving 108 teams. The tournament was an amazing spectacle to watch and it was hugely impressive to see the amazing organisation that went to ensure the tournament went off without (what seemed like) a hitch.
The tournament provides an amazing opportunity for secondary school athletes to compete against each other in a highly competitive environment, which is a crucial ingredient for the development of quality athletes. For the Northern Zone it was impressive to not only see two teams from our Zone in the final (MAGS vs. Baradene), but the fact that so many players from our Zone were identified throughout the week for their quality and consistent performances. One player in particular who needs special mention is Fa’amu Ross from Avondale who was named Overall Player of the Tournament. This is fantastic for Fa’amu, who has had a massive season and consistently played high quality netball, so it was no surprise she was awarded the top award at UNISS.
Looking forward to next month the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championship finals are taking place at Auckland Netball Centre from October 8 to October 11. Competing in that tournament are 5 schools from the Northern Zone which is great news! Those schools are Mount Albert Grammar School, who are defending champions and returning for their tenth consecutive appearance, Pukekohe High School, who are competing for the very first time at the NZSS tournament, Baradene College, who are making their second consecutive appearance, Westlake Girls High School, also making their second consecutive appearance and Auckland Girls Grammar, making their 17th appearance out of 21 years at the Championships, an incredible achievement! This tournament will be hotly contested and closely followed by everyone in the Zone, we wish all 5 teams all the very best!
Planning is well underway for the U23 programme for later this year and 2014. The U23 Head Coach Application form went out to the Centres in the Northern Zone last week and we look forward to receiving the coach applications for this role. Next year each Zone will have one team only competing in the National U23 competition, so a Head Coach and Assistant Coach will be appointed to Netball Northern Zone U23 team. The Head Coach appointment will be for a period of 2 years pending a successful review process at the end of year one, the Assistant Coach will be a one year appointment and this position will be appointed at the beginning of November. The deadline for applications will be 5pm, Friday, September 27.
The applicants will be shortlisted and interviews will take place on the week of October 7 and October 14, depending on the potential applicant’s commitments with NZSS Championships, with a decision being made on the successful applicant no later than 5pm, Friday, October 18.
Tash Osborne (Marketing and Communications Manager). With the 2014 Northern Mystics squad finalised, we begin work on 2014 promotional material, flyers, arena branding etc. Part one is the revamp of the Northern Mystics Website – which is underway, and will feature new improved layout, a Mystics Milestones page (so a history of players, coach, highlights, pictures and video content of each year of the ANZ Championships) – New look for a new year!
Our Northern Zone Facebook page and Website are both continuing to grow, and it is great to see so many centres sending in flyers, or tournament registrations for us to promote for you through both these forums, so keep them coming.

Welcome to our August Newsletter,
Another busy month has flown by, and we are thankfully nearing the end of player contracting for the 2014 Northern Mystics Team. We are pleased to announce Bailey Mes, Erikana Pedersen, Elisapeta Toeava and Nadia Loveday who are our latest batch of signings, along with the appointment of Helene Wilson to Assistant Coach. Congratulations to Helene, who makes the step up from Under 23’s Coach into the ANZ Championship League.
Great to see the New Zealand Under 21’s doing well at the World Champs, and our very own Trish Wilcox, Coach of the Samoan team notching up some well-deserved wins. In saying that, an unfortunate turn of events for Kayla Cullen, who has returned home with a confirmed ruptured ACL.
The date for the Centre Forum has been altered due to a number of you not being able to attend – so please note a new date of Saturday 2nd of November from 10 am – 3 pm, and we will be advising you of the programme, and venue as soon as possible. I look forward to seeing as many representatives from centres as possible.
Julie Paterson – CEO Netball Northern Zone
Trish Wilcox - Community Netball Manager – Trish is currently away in Glasgow, coaching the Samoan Under 23 Team, we wish Trish and the girls the best of luck!
Hamish Barton (High Performance Manager)
Now that the National Age Group representative season has come to an end, most centres will be completing reviews of their programmes, performing coach and player reviews. Performing reviews is one of the key areas that will allow continual development of the game, without a quality review process then nothing gets learnt and mistakes keep getting repeated year after year. The Northern Zone U23 programme is currently undergoing its review process and from that new learning’s will take place, shaping the way the programme is implemented for 2014. I have mentioned to a couple of centres the benefits of using an external company or programme to facilitate their coach reviews.
A programme that I am using to review the four U23 coaches is The Star Coach. This is a fantastic programme which allows your coaches to get good feedback from all their players about the programme that they delivered and covers aspects like communication, leadership, planning. If you would like more information on The Star Coach their website is- http://www.thestarcoach.com there is a cost for the use of this service but it is well worth the investment. I am planning to create review templates for the future that centres can download of the Northern Zone website and utilise for their reviews.
As one programme finishes another arrives! The Lion Foundation National Championships are a little over a month and a half away, we have 4 teams entered in that competition this year, Auckland Netball, Netball North Harbour, Netball Waitakere and the Counties Manukau Cluster Team. All four squads look extremely strong and I am sure we will see all four teams be hugely competitive at the LFNC. I want to wish all four teams all the very best and I’m sure we will have a national championship winning team come from our Zone.
Tash Osborne (Marketing and Communications Manager).
It’s a busy time of year, as we begin the Mystics Membership process. A new Premium Gold Membership has been created this season, along with a revamp of Gold/Red and Blue. Corporate Hospitality prices are being confirmed and will be advertised out via Website and email format to past members.
The Northern Mystics website will undergo a major revamp –which is in the design process at the moment – so a fresh new sleek look for the 2014 Season. Northern Zone Facebook page and Website continue to grow in numbers which is great – please send me through any flyers, news and I will load up.
